GROUNDED ~ AFTER CARE

From time to time even I have to be reminded about how important it is after any type of treatment that the after care is just as vital as the treatments themselves.  Just this week I was reminded of this by the doctor that treated me and the director of the facility that keeps me grounded.

When treating a disease, Functional Medicine is an individual type of treatment, which depends upon the patient, genetics, environment and other factors. When my husband Dan and I were treated for cancer, I was told that cancer just did not happen overnight.  This is much like gaining weight, does the weight come off without dieting or exercising – no.  So why do we expect that cancer will leave right away after surgery, chemo or radiation and any other alternative way.  We must realize that there was a reason, may it be genetics or our environment in which we live in.

Take it from me, it is just important to change your lifestyle as it is the treatments.  I must stress – it is work.  Taking supplements to keep my immune system stronger, eating organic foods (lowering my intake of chemicals and GMO’s), keeping all products that have chemicals away from my body, exercise and meditation.

I have been doing this for the past six and one half years; however, I know it works for this is how I have been managing my cancer.  There have been no signs of cancer for the past six years and I have a quality of life.

So, when you decide on a course of treatment; either conventional or alternative you must also decide on a life style change.  Financially you are spending at the end of treatment the same for poison or Functional Medicine. It’s your life, so you should make the choice and no one else.

After care is just as important as treatments!!!!

THE ROOT OUR ENVIRONMENT

Before we can begin, we first need to know the meaning of the word root. Its the base, foundation, basic part, basic element of anything. We all know this as a part of the body of a plant that develops, typically, from the radicle and grows downward into the soil, anchoring the plant and absorbing nutrients and moisture.  To a human, it is our immune system. The immune system is a system of many biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease.

We all come to the understanding that one is born into this world and also know that we leave this world.  However, the key to all of this is the quality of life one enjoys during the time on earth.  The big picture to all of this is how we play this with our environment.  Our immune system detects how we exercise the activity of our everyday life’s.

It’s the environment that kills us.  Pollution, the food (chemicals, GMO’s processing), water we drink, stress, lack of exercise, which can affect our DNA. What is our DNA? The nucleic acid that is the genetic material determining the makeup of all living cells and many viruses.

So, it is our choice to create around us an environment that is a safe lifestyle.  You need to create an area of less pollution.  You need to eat organic foods which do not have GMO’s and chemicals.  You need to test the water you drink. You need to practice mediation and be around nature with plenty of sunshine for vitamin D. You need to walk, dance, or be involved in the community.  All of the above’s you need to do, will keep your immune system healthy, which will give you a better quality of life.

In my writings later, I will explain how important pollution, food, water, stress, and exercise can make a healthy lifestyle which will give us quality of life.

This is what Functional Medicine does, it gets to the root (the cause) so that we can live a quality of life and a healthier immune system.

ADVISE FROM A TREE ~~FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

A series of writings from me; Sheryl Malin, a passionate person sharing her experience with Functional Medicine.  Not just the symptom, but the cause – root of a disease.

ADVISE FROM A TREE

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

How valuable is your health worth?  When we get sick we go to the doctor to get fixed up.  They ask you how you feel and go by your symptoms.  They take tests on you to rule out any issues you may have to find the disease and then treat it with a pill.  But do they find out the cause, the root of why you have been feeling the way you do and why the disease is there.  No, not normally!

For six years, I have been studying on how I might have ended up with breast cancer and why I chose Functional Medicine.  The reasons for my beginning the program which lead me to my journey I am sharing with you.

To explain all of this, I have taken the advice from one of the oldest types of trees, the bristlecone pine.  First, we have to understand the growth and why they can live to be over 5000 years old.

We need to use our imagination and explore the branches of this pine tree as the diseases that are diagnosed daily.  Each one is treated by our conventional doctors as symptoms and are given medication for treatment.  Isn’t this like putting a band aid on a cut?  Now, what would you think the oldest pine tree would do?  Well, it would talk to its roots and ask what it was lacking. The branches would ask the tree, is it due to the environment (climate, chemicals, water, lack of sunshine, the soil.  All of these situations have something to do with why the pine isn’t growing and is getting sick.

This is much like us, the cause of why we get diseases are much like the pine tree.  In order for us to correct the problem we must go deeper into the root, the why.   This is Functional Medicine. Many diseases begin in the gut because of our food.   The other reasons which cause our illnesses are the environment (pollution), the food (chemicals, GMO’s processing), water we drink, stress, lack of exercise, and our DNA.  In later writings, I will explain all of the above and how we can change our health by changing our lifestyle.  Also, how we can alter our DNA to making it be healthy.

Take it from the bristlecone pine the oldest tree in the world, stand tall and proud.  Go out on a limb. Remember your roots. Drink plenty of water.  Be content with your natural beauty and enjoy the view.

Remember there are no mistakes – just lessons. Trust and love yourself and know that anything is possible.

Coming up – OUR ENVIRONMENT.  I was taught by a wise doctor in Mexico that stated to me, “you may not be able to change the environment outside your home, but you can change it within your home”.

LIFE STYLE CHANGE

In going through any type of medical treatment, the most import step in keeping your body healthy is changing your lifestyle.  I was told by my functional medicine doctor, that the treatments are the easiest part of recovering from a disease and the hardest is you keeping up with a lifestyle.  You are what you eat!!! This is one of the most important steps to continue to create a healthy way of living.  Another change would be to lower stress, this change will be by meditation and exercising. I suggest go to the park and by walking and relaxing in nature you are doing both exercising and meditation.  Going out dancing or even participating in a sport you therefore are exercising.  Just as important as your eating habits, what you put on your body as well as what you smell (chemicals) are all life style changes.  It only takes 26 seconds for products to absorb into your body.  So, it is very important to go organic.

A very humble doctor once told me; you cannot change the environment outside your home, but you can change what you do inside your home.  Make the change and you will live a healthier life.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!!! "Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is a beauty, admire it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is `life, fight for it."-

Remember there was a reason why you became ill, by changing your lifestyle you are getting to the root of the cause.
